DAY 4, MORNING SESSION: Czech Republic and Turkey win 13-16 classification matches
Day 4 of the Women’s European Junior Water Polo Championship in Novi Sad started with classification matches for places 13-16. The Czech Republic edged out Portugal, 6:4, while Turkey beat Romania, 12:8.
The first match of the day saw no goals for a long time, and Portugues ladies managed to take the lead only 35 seconds before the end of the first period. The Czechs equalized immediately, and then scored two goals in the middle of the second quarter and went on a break with a 3:1 lead. In the middle of the third quarter, it became more clear who would win as Daniela Vomastkova netted a pair increasing her team’s lead to four (5:1). However, Portugal was able to gradually bring down the deficit to one (5:4). It had three more extra player situations, but failed to seize opportunity and tie the result. The game’s top scorer Vomastkova scored her fourth goal to seal the victory.
There was twice as many goals in the encounter between Turkey and Romania. Both teams were leading in the first period, but Romania’s 2:1 lead was followed by Turkey’s five consecutive goals which gave her a four-goal advantage (6:2). Turkish girls managed to preserve it until the halftime, and then achieved a six-goal lead in the third quarter, eliminating all doubts about the winner. Excellent Dilara Burali and Echean Gokce Temel each scored three goals for Turkey, as many as Ana Serbanescu did for yhe losing team.
